The five stages of getting bugs to be accepted by developers

Just been checking the Commission Junction site to see if any of my other applications to advertisers has been agreed by them.

Yes that’s right I have to apply to an advertiser to have their adverts available for me to wire them up onto this blog. When you apply to a company, usually they do a real person check of the web site/blog to see if it’s the kind of web page they want their adverts on. Sometimes I’ve been immediately turned down, probably as they have found that I am not based in the U.S. Other times I have been turned down by financial advertisers as this site doesn’t have much to do with finance (Oh yeah. Your bank manager phoned and he wants you to call him immediately. Ed).

I noticed today that against Sony there is an expiry date, which is in a few days time. They’re probably completely underwhelmed by the number of clicks they’ve got from this site and junk advert connections which aren’t worthwhile. My ad campaigns must be the least campainy campaigns in the history of advertising campaigns.

The five stages of raising bugs and them being accepted by developers:

1.     Denial – The “That’s not a bug, that’s a feature” stage
2.     Anger/Resentment – The “What did he wanna test that for” stage.
3.     Bargaining – The “I’ll recompile it and hope for the best, and you can have another go at it” stage.
4.     Depression – The “They’ve found the frigging hole in the system” stage.
5.     Acceptance – The “They’re raising the wrong kinds of bugs” phase. If you hear stage 5 justified like this start again at stage 1 and good luck.

IE7 stopping Adsense ads and some give away money from day traders

693398504_b7949c9ccb.jpgI’ve been trying to make sense of the ad statistics provided by Commission Junction and they are very comprehensive.

Haven’t a clue what they are pointing at though. Somebody that’s got a degree in marketing would probably understand them in a second then have a laugh at the pitiful numbers. Who knows.

Using Vista in anger is getting slightly easier though I’m still not convinced I can support myself on it yet. I think one of the recent Vista updates has changed my Internet connection settings as if I have not actively used the Internet for a while it disconnects. I’m starting to wonder who’s controlling this PC, myself or Microsoft. Also OneCare thinks that Ad-Aware is spyware.  

For the last week or so when I view this blog on either the Vista PC or the XP PC the Google Adsense advert is blank. Have reinstalled it a couple of times with no success. I thought I’d get smart and copied the adsense code to a notepad text file and save it as an HTML file and ran it. IE7 popped up a security message which I got by and the adsense advert was properly displayed with ads. So why doesn’t the exact same code display ads in this blog? I tried amending all sorts of Internet Options security settings but couldn’t get it to display squat.

Somebody told me about some day traders called Rockwell who state in their ads that if you don’t make a profit with their scheme that they will give you $1,001.Oh yeah. Did some research on them and they do want commitment. You have to answer some questions up front just to see if you qualify for the course. One of the questions was can I spare 2 hours to trade after opening. There’s got to be a great big get out clause in there somewhere.

Ads on blog, eeerrrrmmmmm

534924495_5f575ced4c.jpgI signed up with Commission Junction, hence all the ads on the blog.

Dunno if I’ve done the right thing as the ads seem to be taking over. Or is it that I am letting them take over. Anyway they’ve certainly made the page a bit brighter. Seeing all of these name brands make me feel a bit ‘not worthy’ writing this. The statistics that CJ provide though are terrific. I can see counts sliced and diced every which way. For instance I can see the number of hits on the ads displayed here. So after a while, when the statistics have got some weight I can taylor the displayed ads by popularity. What, in effect, this means is that those that are never clicked on get binned.

Its obvious that people take this stuff very seriously and talk about campaigns and tayloring ads to content. And you can see how you could end up tayloring content to ads. I’m sure some people do that. 

God help me if any marketing types ever read that. Soemhow I’ve got a feeling any marketing type that somehow stumbled upon this blog would recoil in horror at the ad placements and consider what I have done to be the amateurish scattershot approach (No, no, its far worse than that. Ed). Well, they’re right, another learning curve.
