BT now losing my domain email from Nicnames

Posted by testcrunch on 31st October 2006

177648069_a4670ae8d0.jpgPhoned BT about the missing email, as it is obvious that Nicnames are gonna do squat, and the support guy said that my domain name, which they knew about, had been lost.

In other words it was no longer associated with the underlying BT email address and therefore any email sent to my domain was automatically bounced.  When I asked how it ‘got lost’ the support guy said ‘these things happen’, duh.

What things happen? Did someone deliberately remove the association? Unlikely.

There’s probably a buggy housekeeping routine which just screws up and gently mangles accounts a little. The upshot of this, bearing in mind the consequences of bounced email, would be to check every day that I am receiving email and if not phone BT. This is preposterous, me checking them on a daily basis. Another IT glitch.

There is an option where I can register my domain with BT instead of Nicnames but it looks fiendishly complicated.

Nicnames email bounced by BT, sounds like crumby spam filtering

Posted by testcrunch on 25th October 2006

Tank with wings?Spoke to Nicnames re the missing email and apparently they are having problems delivering email to BT Connect email addresses and have been for the last two weeks.

Nicnames reckon its BT’s problem as they are bouncing all Nicnames email. But they are working on this problem together. Doesn’t that warm the cockles of your heart (What is a cockle of your heart? Gee, this is a weird language).

I reckon its got something to do with BT spam filtering. BT sees email with a different ‘to’ address on it ie john@johnsmith.com, to the underlying delivery address ie jsmith@btconnect.com and assumes its spam so bins it. I can see a whole buncha exclusions coming over the horizon. One for everybody thats got a domain name from Nicnames.

In the meantime I have set the email to be forwarded to my Hotmail address. Plenty of opportunity to forget all of that email.

Year 2000 testing and the desperate search for staff

Posted by testcrunch on 24th October 2006

I remember a truly pitiful story I heard when a large company was desperate to get some system testers on board to check their Y2K code changes. They were so keen to get people with any relevant experience that they were sent, and nearly interviewed, a CV of a computer operator. Well that what this person thought she was because she operated a digital cash register at a supermarket. Eeeeeuuuuugghgghh.

True Story.
