IE7 stopping Adsense ads and some give away money from day traders

Posted by testcrunch on 4th July 2007

693398504_b7949c9ccb.jpgI’ve been trying to make sense of the ad statistics provided by Commission Junction and they are very comprehensive.

Haven’t a clue what they are pointing at though. Somebody that’s got a degree in marketing would probably understand them in a second then have a laugh at the pitiful numbers. Who knows.

Using Vista in anger is getting slightly easier though I’m still not convinced I can support myself on it yet. I think one of the recent Vista updates has changed my Internet connection settings as if I have not actively used the Internet for a while it disconnects. I’m starting to wonder who’s controlling this PC, myself or Microsoft. Also OneCare thinks that Ad-Aware is spyware.

For the last week or so when I view this blog on either the Vista PC or the XP PC the Google Adsense advert is blank. Have reinstalled it a couple of times with no success. I thought I’d get smart and copied the adsense code to a notepad text file and save it as an HTML file and ran it. IE7 popped up a security message which I got by and the adsense advert was properly displayed with ads. So why doesn’t the exact same code display ads in this blog? I tried amending all sorts of Internet Options security settings but couldn’t get it to display squat.

Somebody told me about some day traders called Rockwell who state in their ads that if you don’t make a profit with their scheme that they will give you $1,001.Oh yeah. Did some research on them and they do want commitment. You have to answer some questions up front just to see if you qualify for the course. One of the questions was can I spare 2 hours to trade after opening. There’s got to be a great big get out clause in there somewhere.

IE7 refreshing in XP but not in Vista

Posted by testcrunch on 23rd February 2007

They better be cloudsI thought I’d noticed that running IE7 in Vista didn’t appear to be refreshing web pages very often, so yesterday specifically tested this latest Windows catastrophe.

On my XP PC I loaded up IE7 with this blog page to check my current hit count (That’s sad, Ed) and did the same with the Vista PC. For a couple of hours I refreshed the page on both PC’s every 30 minutes with the F5 key and guess what? The hit count was being correctly updated on the XP PC but not on the Vista PC.

The only way for me to see the true hit count on the Vista PC was to stop IE7 and restart it. Looks like Microsoft tested IE7 with XP OK but not Vista. Another one of the outstanding ‘no more than 500 bugs’ shipped with Vista I assume.

Update 24/03/07: This is all junk. There is no problem with redrawing the screen. IE7 had cached the page and just automatically redisplays the cached page. Go to Tools and Browsing History and for ‘Check for newer versions of stored pages’ check the ‘everytime I visit the web page’ option and then it all works ok.

Getting rid of the runonce.msn.com page in IE7

Posted by testcrunch on 31st January 2007

Mount Taranaki, New ZealandStart menu -> Run -> regedit and navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] and create DWORD values of 1 for both RunOnceHasShown and RunOnceComplete. Exit regedit and restart IE7

If the above is a bit succinct then try this:

Having navigated to the key, in the right window right click on an empty area and select ’New’ then ‘DWORD’ which will result in a new value with the default values of ‘New Value #1′ in the Name column, Type will be ‘REG_DWORD’ and the value in the Data column will be ’0×00000000 (0)’.

Now we need to amend it to the two values we need. So right click on ‘New Value #1′ and choose the last option to rename it to ‘RunOnceHasShown’. Right click the now new ‘RunOnceHasShown’ value and select Modify which results in a small window opening. Check the ‘Decimal’ radio button and in the ‘Value data’ window enter 1, then click on OK.

Repeat the last two paragraphs and create the ‘RunOnceComplete’ value. Exit regedit.

Restart IE7 and voila your original tabbed page should be displayed. The next question is how did Microsoft create that mess in the first place.
